Learning to read is one of the most important milestones in a child’s early development — yet many children continue to struggle with foundational reading skills.
Recent national reading data shows that a significant number of students are reading below grade level, with many children falling behind before the end of elementary school. Research also continues to highlight disparities in reading outcomes, particularly for students from underserved communities and for boys, who often score lower in reading achievement and engagement.
Early reading success is one of the strongest predictors of long-term academic confidence and achievement. Yet national data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP, 2024) continues to show significant differences in reading proficiency by gender and race. These disparities highlight the importance of early, evidence-based literacy instruction that supports all learners before reading difficulties widen over time.
